How to Perform Pipe Pressure Testing

Plastic pipes, as well as various thermoplastic pipes, composite pipes, steel pipes, engineering hydraulic pipes and oil pipes, are all pressure components. In order to ensure the safety of pipes in future use, it is necessary to preform pressure testing on pipes. Pipe pressure testing contains pipe hydrostatic testing and pipe burst testing. Both tests require a pipe pressure tester, namely pipe hydro test machine.

Pipe Hydrostatic Test Procedes

Pipe hydrostatic pressure test typically uses water as the test medium, and aims to assess whether the material strength of the pipe meets design requirements. Before testing, use two end caps to seal your pipe to prevent pressure leaking during test. And use a hose to connect it onto the hydro test machine’s test port. First, start the prefill pump inside the machine, which will inject water into the pipe circularly. This serves two purposes: Firstly, it helps you remove the air trapped in the pipe, which will affect the accuracy of the test results. Secondly, it can help the machine quickly build up pressure inside the pipe, thereby speeding up the testing process. Then, use the built-in hydraulic pump to pressurize your pipe to 1.5 to 2 times its working pressure and maintain this pressure for a period of time. During pressure holding period, if the pipe does not experience excessive pressure drop or rupture, it indicates that the material strength of the pipe meets the design requirements and is qualified. Otherwise, it is unqualified.

Pipe Burst Pressure Test Procedures

Pipe burst pressure testing is typically conducted after hydrostatic testing, and also using water as the test medium. It is designed to test the ultimate strength of a pipe, thereby determining the pipe’s safety factor and design margin. Start the hydraulic pump inside hydro test machine, it will continuously pressurize your pipe until it cracks. And the pressure that causes the pipe to crack is the pipe’s burst pressure. It is important to note that pipe burst test is a destructive test. If your test pressure is very high, it is recommended to choose a pipe hydro test machine with a protective test chamber, which can ensure personnel safety.
